Description
This substantial piece showcases the Yamaaki kiln’s mastery of unglazed clay. The “lotus” or flower profile features gentle fluting along the walls, leading to a softened rim that frames the composition gracefully. The clay surface has the smooth texture and precise craftsmanship typical of the Tokoname region and like any Yamaaki will develop a patina quite quickly. The pot stands on a subtle, integrated base, providing stability and visual weight appropriate for its depth.
The depth of this container (18,5 cm) makes it an excellent choice for semi-cascade styles or trees with substantial root systems. It is particularly well-suited for a Juniper, a rugged Black Pine, or a flowering Azalea (Satsuki) trained in a taller style, where the deep clay body balances the visual mass of the cascading foliage.

About the kiln:
Yamaaki was one of the most prolific and respected kilns in Tokoname, Japan, founded by Akiji Kataoka in the 1920s. Renowned for their high-quality unglazed purple mud pots and large-scale ceramics, the kiln played a pivotal role in fueling the global post-war bonsai boom. Since the kiln ceased major production around 2011, Yamaaki pots have become increasingly sought after by collectors for their durability, consistent clay quality, and classic lines.
