Description
This exceptional shallow round bonsai pot demonstrates the mastery of the Yamaaki kiln, specifically attributed to its founder, Akitsugu Kataoka (Juudo Shosen). The pot is crafted from high-quality unglazed clay with a distinctively earthy, textured surface that evokes a sense of age and stability. The rim and shallow basin suggest a “Nanban” or literati influence, prioritizing a naturalistic aesthetic over rigid formality. The clay body exhibits a rich, varying patina that ranges from deep grey to warm earthen browns, a hallmark of superior Tokoname firing techniques.
The shallow depth and rustic finish make this pot a perfect candidate for Literati (Bunjin) style bonsai trees, particularly Japanese Red Pine (Pinus densiflora) or Juniper. It would also serve beautifully as a basin for a delicate rock planting (Ishitsuki).
