About the Artist:
Gyozan Nakano, born in 1940, celebrated his 50th anniversary as a ceramic artist in 2020. Hailed in Japanese bonsai magazines as “a leader in Japan’s bonsai pot world” and “a pioneer in the field of unglazed pots,” he is a bonsai pot artisan whom Japan takes pride in.
Having apprenticed under Keizan, he established himself independently in 1972. Specializing in unglazed pots, he creates works in a full range of sizes and shapes, from small and medium pots to extra-large ones. He devoted himself to studying clay materials and firing techniques, culminating in the development of his unique clay color, “Akebono” (Dawn) around 1976. Although he once made handmade pots using molds, he now solely produces handmade pots using slab and coil techniques. His pots are highly regarded for their texture and shape that enhance the appearance of bonsai trees and are known for acquiring an antique patina quickly with use. However, due to the handmade process, his annual production remains limited. As a leading Japanese bonsai pot artist, his works are frequently featured in the Kokufu Bonsai Exhibition (Japan’s most prestigious bonsai exhibition).
