About the Artist:
Hokido (Naoyuki Maenami) was a Tokoname-based bonsai pot maker, founded in 1976. While no longer in production, its pots are now considered rare collector’s items, as only pieces already in circulation remain on the market. The workshop specialized in small-sized bonsai pots, skillfully bringing out the natural character of the clay. Its signature was a smooth surface and a distinctive reddish hue known as shudei bokashi, a subtle gradient effect that earned Hokido a loyal following among bonsai enthusiasts. The studio also produced some medium-sized containers, maintaining the same attention to clay quality and aesthetic. As more makers in Tokoname began producing similar shudei bokashi styles, Hokido gradually withdrew from bonsai pot production, focusing instead on everyday ceramic items such as teapots and teacups. Today, well-used Hokido pots in the hands of collectors often display a deep, aged patina, with some examples closely resembling classic Chinese shudei wares. Their rarity and refined finish make them especially prized among bonsai pot connoisseurs.
