Description
This large unglazed bonsai pot by Shōzan Watanabe features a classic rectangular form with a bold rim that gives structure and presence. The clay is a rich warm brown, with a surface that really comes to life with a slight oiling to deepen the tone. This shape is increasingly rare in contemporary bonsai pottery, especially from Shōzan, and this example is beautifully versatile—well suited for medium to large bonsai, conifers or azaleas, especially for classic compositions.

About Shōzan Watanabe
Shōzan Watanabe was a master potter of Tokoname, and the father of Ikko (Kazuhiro Watanabe). He produced superb bonsai pots using top-quality clay, with great attention to detail and traditional forms. His work is admired for strong symmetrical shapes, elegant rims, and the rich tones of his unglazed pieces. Though Shōzan’s pieces are no longer being produced, his legacy lives on; his pots, especially in classic unglazed forms, are sought after by collectors.
