Description
This exquisite shohin-sized bonsai pot by the renowned Tokoname potter Bigei (Hirata Atsumi) exemplifies the mastery of unglazed ceramics. Crafted from high-quality red-brown clay, the pot is rectangular with softened corners and a distinct, outwardly rolled rim that adds a sense of visual weight and stability. The smooth, burnished surface of the unglazed clay has a subtle, warm patina, highlighting the impeccable craftsmanship and the rich, earthy tones characteristic of Bigei’s work.
The warm vermilion hues of the unglazed clay provide a striking contrast to the deep greens of coniferous species, making this pot an excellent choice for a shohin Black Pine, a Juniper or even a Hinokki (Chamaecyparis).

About the potter:
Bigei, the art name of Hirata Atsumi (born 1939), is a celebrated bonsai potter from the Tokoname region. He began working with ceramics in 1958 and opened his own kiln in 1975. While Bigei produced pots in a variety of shapes and sizes, his shohin-sized pots in particular have earned great acclaim. From simple, elegant forms to richly ornamented and carved designs, his creations reflect both refinement and versatility. With the closure of the Bigei kiln, no new pieces are being made, making his existing works even more treasured. This rarity, combined with the high quality and artistic detail, has made Bigei pots prized possessions among bonsai collectors and connoisseurs worldwide.
