Description

This unglazed rectangle bonsai pot by Seizan combines strength, balance, and character. The pronounced rim gives the form a clear definition, while the band along the base reinforces the structure and adds visual weight. Its surface shows a natural patina, developed through age and use, which enriches the clay with subtle depth and charm.

One foot has a small chip, shown in the detail photographs. This has been reflected in the price, and when the pot is placed with that side at the back, it remains fully suitable for use. With its well-proportioned design, this pot is an excellent choice for conifers such as a strong pine or juniper, where its understated presence enhances the beauty of the tree without distraction.

About Seizan:
Real name: Makoto Kataoka (born 1927, Shōwa 2)

Seizan was the third-generation successor of a Tokoname kiln founded in 1882. From 1948 onward, he played a central role in shaping modern Tokoname ware. Fascinated by antique Chinese unidei wares, he studied their colors and forms, and—together with advice from bonsai masters like Saichi Suzuki—developed new clays such as Shōwan-dei, Tokoname purple clay, and pear-skin clay. In 1978 he was officially recognized as a Traditional Craftsman of Tokoname ware.

Seizan’s guiding belief was that the bonsai comes first, and the pot exists for it. He practiced bonsai himself and often drew inspiration from cultivation. Through this philosophy, he helped establish an era where the individuality of the artist could be seen in Tokoname pottery. His hand-crafted works are relatively scarce, appearing on the market only occasionally. Today, his son Reihō continues the family tradition.
