Description
A refined round mame bonsai pot by second-generation Heian Kozan, finished in the same soft sky blue glaze seen on many of his Shohin works. This smaller form maintains the same level of craftsmanship and visual clarity — ideal for compact deciduous mame bonsai such as Zelkova, maple, or trident maple. The calm sky blue glaze enhances seasonal displays and gives the small size added presence without overwhelming the tree.
This pot’s compact footprint and simple elegance make it well-suited for subtle, naturalistic displays, whether in a formal setting or a personal collection focused on mame and shohin trees.

About Second-Generation Heian Kozan:
Born in 1947, Katsumi Koike succeeded his father — the first-generation Kozan, Kazuo Koike — one of Japan’s most important bonsai pot artists. Originally trained in textile design, he transitioned to ceramics in the early 1960s under his father’s guidance. His early works under the name Shōkozan included glazed round pots and Mishima-style forms.
After officially inheriting the name Kozan in 1973, he became known for refined, wheel-thrown bonsai pots (rokuro-mono) and original decorative styles such as gold and silver ceremonial patterns. He produced both his own and collaborative works at the Kozan Workshop, contributing significantly to the kiln’s legacy until his retirement.
Though now retired, his pots remain valued for their elegance, precision, and compatibility with deciduous trees, especially in the mame and Shohin sizes. This piece carries on that quiet tradition in a compact form.
